The South African Embassy in Athens commemorates Heritage Day under the theme “Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the ties that bind us.”

25.09.2026

This year’s theme highlights the rich diversity of cultures, languages, traditions, customs, and histories that collectively shape South Africa’s unique national identity. It serves as a reminder that our heritage is not confined to the past, but continues to live and evolve through our people, communities, and our relations with the rest of the world.

South Africans remain committed to preserving, promoting, and safeguarding the country’s diverse cultural heritage, which is a cornerstone of nation-building and national identity.

Our living heritage, expressed through languages, music, dance, storytelling, traditions, rituals, and cultural practices passed down through generations, fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

South Africa’s rich cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths, reflecting the values of Ubuntu and solidarity, while celebrating the unique heritage that unites and enriches our nation.

In recognition of South Africa’s rich heritage and its enduring struggle for freedom, viewers are encouraged to watch the documentary “George Bizos Icon”, celebrating the life and legacy of George Bizos, the renowned human rights lawyer and close friend of Nelson Mandela. The documentary will be broadcast on ERT3 on Sunday, 4 October, at 22:00, and will thereafter be available on the ERTFLIX platform for 30 days, exclusively within Greece.

We invite friends of South Africa to join in Heritage celebrations by honouring and sharing our histories and contribute to preserving our living heritage for future generations.
