EmiCert becomes the world’s first accredited CBAM verifier

Accreditation strengthens EmiCert’s position in greenhouse gas verification and adds a critical new capability to CTI Group’s international portfolio

EmiCert has received accreditation from the Hellenic Accreditation System (ESYD) for the verification of embedded emissions under the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

With this accreditation, EmiCert becomes the first verification body worldwide accredited specifically to perform verification under the CBAM framework with capabilities covering all six CBAM-regulated sectors.

The new scope expands EmiCert’s accredited greenhouse gas verification capabilities and, as part of CTI Group, strengthens the Group’s international portfolio of testing, inspection, certification and verification services. Through EmiCert, CTI can now provide accredited CBAM verification to operators of installations producing covered goods outside the European Union.

“This accreditation is the result of almost a year of focused technical and organizational work by our team,” said Kostas Antoniadis, CEO of EmiCert. “It enables EmiCert to apply its extensive experience in industrial emissions verification to one of the European Union’s most significant new climate policy instruments. As part of CTI Group, we can make this accredited capability available internationally, combining technical competence, independence and a strong understanding of the sectors affected by CBAM.”

A brief overview of CBAM and how it works

CBAM is the European Union’s mechanism for applying a carbon price to the embedded emissions of certain goods imported into the EU. Its purpose is to address carbon leakage and support comparable carbon costs for goods produced within and outside the European Union.

The mechanism initially covers iron and steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, electricity and hydrogen. Where CBAM declarations are based on actual emissions, the relevant embedded emissions data must be verified by an independent verifier accredited by an EU National Accreditation Body.

Accredited CBAM verifiers assess the monitoring methodology, emissions calculations and supporting evidence at the installation where the goods are produced. They subsequently issue verification reports that can be used by authorized CBAM declarants when submitting their annual declarations through the CBAM Registry.

EmiCert’s accreditation allows the company to respond to the emerging verification needs of manufacturers and supply chains exporting CBAM-covered goods to the European market.
