DNV wins three accolades at distinguished gas industry awards
Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) and Energy & Utilities Alliance (EUA) recognizes DNV’s industry experience at the Gas Industry Awards 2024 ceremony in London.
London, UK, 10 May 2024 – DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, has won three honours at the Gas Industry Awards 2024. Organized by the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) and Energy & Utilities Alliance (EUA), the Awards have been recognizing the outstanding achievements of individuals and businesses working across the gas industry for over 25 years.
The twelve categories saw nominations from some of the biggest players in the UK gas industry, including SGN, Wales & West Utilities Limited, Cadent Gas, and National Gas Transmission, among others.
Jo-Anne Tomkins, Senior Principal Engineer, has triumphed in the most competitive category, Engineer of the Year Award in recognition of her over 10 years’ experience working as a consultant to the natural gas industry, focusing on the safety assessment of the transmission and distribution networks. For the past five years’, Jo-Anne’s work has concentrated on hydrogen projects, ensuring the network is safe, practical, operable, and cost-effective for a hydrogen transition using existing natural gas infrastructure.
Hari Vamadevan, Senior Vice President, has been honoured with the Leadership Award. A respected thought leader on a number of energy topics who regularly presents an independent view of the industry at events, contributes to news articles and media interviews, Hari leads a 700-strong team helping customers make the transition to a decarbonized energy future.
DNV’s Research and Development facility at Spadeadam, which conducts full-scale hazardous trials (fires, explosions, and blasts) and simulation of real-world environments, won the Net Zero Innovation Award. This is in recognition of the work that DNV and its partners are undertaking on a number of hydrogen projects, including Hy4Heat, H21 and FutureGrid, which are delivering practical experiments and impact studies, as well as constructing full scale test facilities.
Tim Illson, Principal Specialist was also awarded the silver medal for this presentation on hydrogen pipeline conversion.
Hari Vamadevan, Senior Vice President, and Regional Director UK & Ireland of Energy Systems at DNV, said: “We are thrilled that DNV has been recognized with three award wins at the 2024 Gas Industry Awards and also picked up a 4th with the STATS group supporting their project of the year. DNV has a long and rich history of de-risking and ensuring the safe use of many energy vectors, including natural gas. We are now driving forward the energy transition by providing assurance for the safe use of hydrogen. Winning these awards would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our colleagues and customers who are pushing the technological and decarbonization boundaries of all energy vectors.”
He continued: “I’m also incredibly honoured to have been personally recognized by the organization for my leadership approach. We are on a journey driving towards net zero ambitions and all colleagues, customers and citizens have a part to play in achieving this reality. Getting their buy-in will determine the success of meeting these goals.”
DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook UK 2024 forecasts that gas will continue to play an important role in the energy transition. Despite a strong shift to low-carbon sources providing 65% of the UK’s primary energy supply by 2050, a third of supply will still be fossil fuels by mid-century, dominated by their remaining unabated use in household heating and aviation.
