Chinese shipyard to build world’s first CNG carrier

Chinese shipbuilder Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry Ltd. reports that it has signed a shipbuilding contract with CIMC ENRIC SJZ GAS that will see it build the world’s first CNG carrier.

The vessel will be operated by Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PT PLN), Indonesian National Electric Company, for natural gas transportation between the islands of Indonesia (see earlier story).

With a nominal CNG capacity of 2,200 cu.m, the vessel has been designed by CIMC ORIC, using natural gas as fuel, driven by a dual fuel main engine, and with a 110 m length over all and a 14knots design speed. It will be designed and constructed to dual ABS and Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia class and is expected to deliver in May 2016.
