“Hydrogen & Shipping – Facts of the Present & Thoughts for the Future”   

Hydrogen is the mother of all fuels because it is the feedstock for all synthetic/e-fuels like methane, methanol and ammonia. It is not found free in nature but it is the most abundant element. It is an energy carrier which means that it can act as a “battery” of energy. Today its production is to a large percentage about 96% from the reaction of steam with coal, natural gas and biomass, producing 10 tons of CO₂ per ton hydrogen. Green hydrogen is still very expensive. Yet hydrogen can be utilized in ICE and fuel cells in a single propulsion mode or in a hybrid one. The presentation will describe the challenges of hydrogen as a marine fuel and well as what needs to be done to establish a robust hydrogen economy.
