Dimitris Bezantakos, Founder of NAVIGATOR SHIPPING CONSULTANTS, and Ioanna Bezantakou, Founder of NAVIGATOR Forum, who laid the foundations for an initiative centred on personal communication, the exchange of views and the development of relationships built on trust.

Danae Bezantakou emphasised that the Forum’s true value cannot be measured solely in numbers, but rather in the experiences, partnerships and relationships developed throughout the years, highlighting the importance of transforming dialogue into meaningful initiatives and action.

The Forum was presented by Olga Bezantakou, Chief Legal Counsel / COO of NAVIGATOR SHIPPING CONSULTANTS, who also highlighted the company’s 35th anniversary, continuing a family maritime tradition spanning more than five decades. Presenting NAVIGATOR’s international activities, she emphasised the importance of towage and shipping agency services in ensuring vessel safety, operational efficiency and competitiveness.

Today, the company represents internationally established towing companies and shipping agencies through a network extending to more than 1,500 ports worldwide, with access to over 1,000 tugboats. The availability of suitable tugs, competitive pricing and reliable service remain essential to supporting the daily operational requirements of Greek shipowners.

Institutional Addresses: The Strategic Importance of Greek Shipping
The anniversary Forum was honoured by the presence and welcoming addresses of Vassilis Kikilias, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, George Alexandratos, President of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, and Vassilis Korkidis, President of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Vassilis Kikilias referred to the complex international environment and the strategic importance of Greek shipping, expressing his pride in the industry’s leading global role. He placed particular emphasis on strengthening maritime cooperation between Greece and the United States, highlighting the sector’s significance within bilateral strategic relations, also referring to discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

George Alexandratos highlighted shipping’s contribution to Greek society and the national economy, noting that the Greek-owned fleet represents approximately 20% of global and 60% of European carrying capacity. He stressed the need for adequate infrastructure, competitive operating costs and technological certainty before committing to major investments in the energy transition. He also referred to international efforts to safeguard the competitiveness of Greek shipping and raised the important question of how the costs of the green transition should be distributed.

Vassilis Korkidis emphasised the importance of cooperation between businesses and young entrepreneurs, focusing on the resilience of maritime transport, freedom of navigation and seafarer safety. He also highlighted the need for investments that combine competitiveness with sustainable development, as well as initiatives that attract young people to maritime careers.

Reinventing Maritime: Building the Connected, Intelligent Ecosystem of the Future
A particularly interesting presentation was delivered by Michele De Iudicibus, Senior Vice President – Head of Sales and Business Development at Fincantieri NexTech, entitled “Reinventing Maritime: Building the Connected, Intelligent Ecosystem of the Future.”

The presentation explored the vision of a more connected and intelligent maritime ecosystem, highlighting the role of advanced technologies and digital transformation in enhancing operational efficiency, safety and collaboration across the maritime value chain.

From Regulation to Reality: Delivering Shipping’s Energy Transition
The first panel discussion, moderated by Dimitris Anassis, Partner at Hill Dickinson, explored different perspectives on shipping’s energy transition and the challenges associated with implementing international and European environmental regulations.

Nikos Athanasoulis, Regional Advisory Lead at Lloyd’s Register, stressed that regulatory frameworks are accelerating maritime decarbonization and providing clearer investment signals for the industry. The next challenge is scaling the fuels and infrastructure needed to deliver net-zero shipping

Boy Sleddering, CEO of NAVARIS, addressed the gap between environmental ambitions and their practical implementation, noting that continuous regulatory changes create uncertainty and complicate long-term planning.

Panos Zachariadis, Technical Director at Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management, expressed strong concerns regarding the viability of certain alternative fuels, arguing that available renewable energy and the necessary infrastructure are not yet sufficient to support a large-scale transition.

Carola Yannouli, General Manager at OCEANKING, focused on existing technologies that can improve energy efficiency, including high-efficiency propellers, optimisation of onboard energy production and consumption, and shore power solutions.

Philip Nielsen, Co-Founder of ORIANI, highlighted the immediate benefits of digitalisation and reliable data in improving vessel performance, emphasising the need to focus not only on emissions reporting but, more importantly, on achieving actual emissions reductions.

John Tsogas, Head of Bunkering & Trading – SEKAVIN joining the Forum online, discussed current conditions in the global marine bunker fuel market, highlighting rising fuel prices, increasing regulatory pressures and challenges.

The discussion demonstrated that the energy transition requires a stable regulatory framework, technological maturity, alternative fuel availability and commercially viable solutions, with improved energy efficiency remaining a key priority.

Connected Ships, Empowered People: Technology Supporting the Human Element
The second panel, “Connected Ships, Empowered People,” was moderated by Dr. Matthew Maheras, CIO of Metrostar Management Corp. and President of AMMITEC, and focused on shipping’s digital transformation, data management and the role of people in operational decision-making.

Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, co-CEO of Tototheo Global, emphasised that connectivity and access to real-time data can improve decision-making without diminishing the Master’s authority and responsibility on board.

Stefanos Chartomatzidis, Chief Commercial Officer at Prisma Electronics, highlighted the importance of data reliability, transparency and effective management, noting that access to information does not necessarily imply ownership of that data.

Petros Achtypis, CEO of Prevention at Sea, stressed that the real value of technological systems lies in simplifying procedures and reducing workloads, with appropriate training being essential for those expected to use them.

Akis Konstantinidis, HR Manager at Technomar Shipping, addressed the difficulties crews face in adapting to continuous technological developments, emphasising the importance of gradual training and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

The panel highlighted that technology should enhance human capabilities rather than replace them, with priority given to training, data reliability and operational safety.

Green Funding or No Funding: Sustainability as a Financial Reality
The panel “Green Funding or No Funding,” moderated by Pinelopi Kassani, Partner – Governance Risk and Assurance at Moore Greece, examined the relationship between environmental performance, access to finance and investment decisions in shipping.

Konstantinos Economou, Head of Shipping Finance at CrediaBank, stressed that the energy transition requires a predictable regulatory framework, adequate infrastructure and available technologies. He also raised the issue of transparency regarding how EU ETS revenues are allocated and utilised.

Vaios Papagrigorakis, Senior Relationship Manager at Eurobank, highlighted the growing importance of environmental performance and the early preparation of shipping companies, emphasising the need for credible transition strategies supported by specific, measurable targets.

Anastasios Zoupas, Partner – Audit at EY, discussed the importance of reliable and adaptable business plans, together with accurate environmental data, noting that conventional shipping finance will continue to play an important role in the sector.

Nikos Melachrinos, CFO of Forth Shipping, focused on the commercial dimension of sustainability, the importance of investing in modern, more fuel-efficient vessels, and the role of both shipowners and charterers in investment decisions.

The discussion demonstrated that sustainability is increasingly becoming a key consideration in shipping finance, with credible transition plans, reliable data and appropriate financial instruments playing an ever more significant role.

The Revival of the Greek Shipbuilding Industry
A highlight of the programme was the fireside chat between Danae Bezantakou and Panos Xenokostas, Founder, President and CEO of ONEX Shipyards & Technologies Group and President of the Hellenic Shipyards Association, focusing on the prospects of the Greek shipbuilding industry.

The discussion explored the transformation of Greek shipyards from a prolonged period of uncertainty into a new phase of investment, technological development and international cooperation.

Particular emphasis was placed on the need to create a competitive shipbuilding ecosystem based on reliability, timely delivery, competitive costs and advanced technical expertise.

The importance of partnerships with the United States, South Korea and Belgium, a stable institutional framework and long-term strategic planning was also highlighted.

The revival of the Greek shipbuilding industry was presented not only as a significant business opportunity, but also as an investment in employment, regional development and the preservation of Greek shipbuilding expertise.

The Sea at the Heart of Geopolitics: Shipping at the Centre of Global Developments
Geopolitics was among the most timely topics of the Forum, highlighting the close relationship between international security, maritime trade and strategic competition.

Professor Athanasios Platias, Strategy Chair at the University of Piraeus, delivered a special presentation on shifts in the global balance of power, focusing on competition between the United States and China and the strategic importance of maritime routes and international chokepoints.

During the panel discussion that followed, also moderated by Professor Platias, John Cotzias, President of the Hellenic Shipbrokers Association, addressed the impact of conflicts in the Red Sea, Black Sea and Arabian Gulf, emphasising that beyond financial and insurance costs, the protection of human life must remain the foremost priority.

Theofilos Haldezos, Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Ltd, highlighted rising insurance costs, increasingly complex chartering conditions and the risks faced by crews operating in high-risk areas.

Stelios Dimouleas, CEO of ALMI Tankers, discussed the emergence of new trade routes and parallel markets, as well as the impact of sanctions and geopolitical conflicts on operational costs.

Angelo Lazaridis, Chief Commercial Officer at Diaplous Group, focused on modern maritime security threats, including unmanned systems, ballistic missiles and electronic warfare, stressing the importance of dynamic risk assessments, crew training and effective coordination with the relevant authorities.

Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, CEO of Skaramangas Shipyards, highlighted the strategic importance of shipbuilding, discussing the challenges facing Europe following the shift of a significant share of shipbuilding production towards Asia, and the need to reassess European industrial strategy.

The discussion demonstrated that geopolitical developments directly affect trade routes, maritime security, operating costs and commercial decisions, while also highlighting shipping’s long-standing ability to adapt to international crises.

Shipping Now: What’s Shaping the Industry
The Forum concluded with “Shipping Now: What’s Shaping the Industry,” a discussion between Danae Bezantakou and George Mangos, Principal at Interunity Group, connecting the Forum’s main themes with the current priorities of the shipping market.

George Mangos discussed the need to reassess the industry’s priorities, noting that fragmented regulatory frameworks create significant distortions and complicate long-term planning.

He emphasised that energy efficiency and decarbonisation can be complementary objectives, while competitiveness and cost efficiency remain fundamental principles of shipping operations.

He also highlighted the importance of reskilling seafarers and maritime professionals, and the role of artificial intelligence as a tool to support safety and navigation.

The discussion identified geopolitics as a major source of uncertainty, capable of rapidly reshaping market conditions and the strategic decisions of shipping companies.

Danae Bezantakou expressed her belief that shipping is a unique example of peaceful coexistence and international cooperation, even amid intense geopolitical tensions and extraordinary circumstances, including the pandemic and other global crises.

Concluding the Forum, Danae Bezantakou extended her sincere thanks to all participants, speakers, moderators, sponsors and partners who contributed to the success of the anniversary event, emphasising that the maritime community’s continued support and trust remain the Forum’s greatest strength.

She renewed the invitation to meet again at NAVIGATOR Forum 2027, reaffirming the commitment to meaningful dialogue and the development of new partnerships.

25 Years of NAVIGATOR Forum – And the Conversation Goes
