The potential conflict between the United States and Iran could represent the final stage of a broader confrontation that began with the invasion of Israel by Palestinian armed groups three years ago. This harsh and violent incursion involved the entry of militants into residential areas and the massacre of civilian populations. This development led to a prolonged conflict, which gradually weakened and ultimately eliminated Iran\u2019s footholds in the Gaza Strip, in Lebanon, and, as it appears, in Yemen.<\/p>\n
As a result, Iran has lost a significant portion of its influence in this particular confrontation. What seems to remain in the event of a potential conflict is the possible collapse of the existing regime and its replacement by a more democratic one, a development that could, however, lead to the establishment of friendly relations with the West. Such a conflict appears increasingly likely, although diplomacy suggests that it may ultimately be avoided. Should it occur, it would bring about broader geopolitical realignments.<\/p>\n
Among these could be a regime change in Iran, which would secure the Persian Gulf for the West and deprive China of a major oil supplier, apart from Russia. This is considered particularly significant, as it would reduce threats to the flow of oil from the Middle East to the rest of the world, contributing to the stabilization of the global economy. At the same time, it would allow the West to redeploy forces at a critical moment of confrontation with Russia and an intensifying rivalry with China.<\/p>\n
For Greece, the potential benefits could be even greater. The creation of a new, pro-Western state in the region could serve as an additional ally against Turkey, in contrast to the current theocratic regime in Iran, which maintains close ties with Russia. Moreover, if the creation of an independent Kurdish state is to proceed, this could act as a significant strategic distraction for Turkey, limiting the pressure it exerts on Greece.<\/p>\n
The creation of any new political entity east of Turkey could, in any case, be regarded as a positive development for both Greece and the West. It would secure oil transit routes from the Gulf to the Indian Ocean and foster conditions of greater stability in the wider Middle East region. For Greece in particular, it would mean the presence of an ally to the east capable of absorbing part of Turkey\u2019s aggressiveness and military power. In any case, this crisis, although likely to cause turbulence, could ultimately work to the advantage of the West and lead to a new rebalancing of geopolitical realities, with positive implications for Greece as well.<\/p>\n
