Kouroumplis<\/strong>, announced the intention to convene a Committee to prepare the greek regulatory framework for electrification in ports and ships. The conference was also inaugurated by the Mayor of Piraeus <strong>I. Moralis <\/strong>and the Dean of School of Naval Architecture &amp; Marine Engineering <strong>Professor G. Grigoropoulos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The key outcomes of elemed project, the project policy recommendations for effective regulatory framework and the &ldquo;Killini case&rdquo;, the first on-shore power installation in Eastern Mediterranean, were featured at the first conference session.<\/p>\n<p>The first panel discussion focused on zero-emission technologies for ports and vessels, where the design of an all-electric RoPax vessel developed within elemed project, the experience of port of Antwerp in implementing cold-ironing applications, available battery &amp; power solutions as well as the capacity of greek companies to support the switch to greener marine transportation, were presented.<\/p>\n<p>How ports could be transformed to emissions free energy hubs was the focus of the next panel discussion, where representatives from Ministry of Shipping, Port Authorities, Regulatory Authority of Energy &amp; Cruise sector underlined the challenges and opportunities for ports to accommodate electrification technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Notably interesting was the last panel discussion on greek islands potential to develop a sustainable insular ecosystem with the exploitation of electrification technologies. The Orkney islands&rsquo; experience of bridging renewable energy with marine transportation as well as strategies for supporting insular communities&rsquo; mobility and interconnections were at the forefront of the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Conference photos available <a href=\"https:\/\/photos.google.com\/share\/AF1QipMcjYWdxFVOrNGrnkoZS0hBOA3IfWDMc0dRW8LGGIxmygD8jZpYHJBbqvIlpzNx0w?key=ZTFXSTdhTEg1NlV2ZVhYUEw2WUdod1h1Y09IQU1n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conference presentations will be uploaded shortly at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elemedconference.eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.elemedconference.eu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Conference was held under the auspices of: Ministry of Maritime Affairs &amp; Insular Policy; Ministry of Environment &amp; Energy; Piraeus Municipality; Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association; Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology; Hellenic Ports Association; Union of Cruise Ship Owners &amp; Associated Members; Hellenic Chamber of Shipping; Association of Passenger Shipping Companies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>About elemed<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Elemed<\/strong> (<strong>El<\/strong>ectrification in the <strong>E<\/strong>astern <strong>Med<\/strong>iterranean) prepares the&nbsp;ground for the introduction of&nbsp;cold ironing, electric bunkering and hybrid ships&nbsp;across the Eastern Mediterranean Sea corridor, aiming at eliminating emissions &amp; noise in ports and surrounding urban area. It is a co-funded by European Union project, studying all technical, regulatory and financial issues related to the establishment of cold-ironing infrastructure, in four ports (Piraeus, Killini, Lemesos, Koper), involving three countries.
