The Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) is poised to announce that Greek shipowner Captain Panagiotis Tsakos will be named its 2015 commodore at its annual conference in March.

The founder of the Tsakos group has accepted the honour, TradeWinds understands.

“Captain Tsakos has been a shipping industry force for decades, positively impacting the world through trade, support of the seafaring community through countless training and employment initiatives, a capital markets pioneer, a thoughtful designer of ships and an enormously generous supporter of causes in support of people, the environment and education around the world,” said CMA president Ian Workman in a message to past commodores.

“We are of course honoured to welcome him as our new commodore,” he wrote in the email obtained by TradeWinds.

When contacted by TradeWinds for confirmation, Workman declined to comment, saying a formal announcement of the new commodore is scheduled for next week.

Tsakos will take over the commodore role from Scorpio Group president Robert Bugbee, who received the oversized hat that comes with the title in March.

If Tsakos is unable to attend the Stamford gala in person, his son Nikolas Tsakos, who is chief executive of tanker owner Tsakos Energy Navigation, will attend in his place, TradeWinds understands.

The CMA, which is among the highest profile shipping organisations in the US, appoints a new commodore each year as the group’s honorary leader.

Prior winners have included chief executives Peter Evensen of Teekay Corp, Oivind Lorentzen of Seacor Holdings and Angeliki Frangou of Navios Maritime Holdings.
