Piraeus master plan under review at Shipping Ministry

26.09.2019

A government review of the Piraeus Port Authority’s (OLP) master plan by investor Cosco, including two new projects, is ongoing on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 25) at the Shipping Ministry.

The Committee for Port Planning and Development at the Ministry of Shipping began its meeting at 09:00 on the same day and resumed at 16:00 after a four-hour break, sources said.

The Committee had approved the initial version of the master plan in July, before the two new projects were added. The two involve construction of a fourth pier at the Neo Ikonio section of Piraeus’ container terminal and a new car terminal. The committee president called for a seven-day extension to deliberations to allow affected mayors and agencies to weigh in on the plan, while mayors and agency heads requested a longer time as well during their attendance in the morning session.

The mayors and agencies also pointed out that this version of the master plan has not been released for public deliberations, as per agreement. OLP managers responded that they are not obliged to do so, as it is an amended plan, not a new one. This was refuted by government agency representatives, who said the new pier and cruiseship passenger terminal are new investments.
