Ordering dips in January
Newbuilding activity dipped in January compared to the first month of last year despite a surge in orders for large containershps, according to a report by Greek shipbroker Golden Destiny.
There were no passengership orders during the month, a drop from seven in January 2014.
Shipyards received orders for 153 vessels during the month, a 1.9\% decrease compared to the 156 vessels booked in January 2014.
But the figure was a 17.7\% rise in vessels ordered compared to December 2014.
The ordering amounted to $4.99bn in investments.
The figures only take into consideration traditional shipping classes and exclude offshore vessels.
Golden Destiny’s monthly report showed that containership ordering surged from just two vessels in the first month of last year to 28 ships in January 2015.
Car carrier orders also skyrocketed, with 60 vessels booked compared to four a year earlier.
Orders in the bulker space fell by 78\%, and there were 68\% fewer tankers booked. LPG carrier orders dropped by 93\%.
