” LNG for Shipping – Risks and Opportunities”

29.05.2015

Current and upcoming legislation puts tighter limits on emissions of seagoing vessels in European coastal waters. Emissions Control Areas (ECA) forces the operators of vessels to use propulsion and fuel systems that result in lower emissions.

One of the most forward looking solutions to compliance is the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as shipping fuel. The European Commission, supported by the consortium of PwC, DNV GL and MSL, is carrying a study on the perception of the risks and opportunities of LNG as a shipping fuel.

Workshop will be dedicated to presentation of the preliminary findings of the study, the case studies and discussion about the ideas to improve public awareness. The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) is also conducting an analysis and evaluation of the gaps that exist in the regulatory framework for LNG-fuelled ships and the provision of LNG fuel. The research is focusing on risks and opportunities of using LNG as a shipping fuel and may steer the work to improve safety standards to support the use of LNG for shipping.
