Greeks top newbuilding table

20.02.2015

More than one in every ten dollars spent on newbuildings during 2014 came from a Greek owner, Golden Destiny claims.

Hellenic owners invested in new ships worth $9.59bn last year with an upturn in appetite for big crude tankers, the broker said in its annual newbuilding survey.

This left Greek owners ahead of the $8.77bn invested by their Chinese counterparts during a year in which spending on newbuildings totalled $88.83bn, according to Golden Destiny’s numbers.

Tankers accounted for the largest slice of the Greek purse, the broker’s survey claims, with contracts worth $3.50bn placed.

The survey says the 12 VLCCs booked by Greeks in 2014 marks a 71\% annual rise.

Suezmax contracting also showed a steep climb, with the 24 tankers added a 380\% rise from the previous year, the report said.

By contrast, Greek capesize ordering fell by almost two thirds to just 31 vessels and panamaxes were off the Hellenic menu completely in 2014.
