ECOMASYN as a socially responsible synergy to advance the retrofit sector

20.02.2015

Recentand anticipated environmental regulations, related to a cleaner environment, challenge and affect the shipping business. Ships are required to adjust in the new era, i.e. lower CO2, SOx, NOx emissions, cleaner Ballast Water, energy efficient performance etc.

Furthermore, oil price fluctuation and the unstable energy/economic environment become a serious concern for the decision makers. Being proactive, a non-profit initiative emerged in Greece, aiming at dealing with all these issues in the years to come. Members are Design Offices, Contractors, Suppliers, Consultants, etc., covering a wide range of activities needed in marine business. A synergy of more than 20 companies based in Greece, with the support of classification societies, agreed to the establishment of a non-profit Organization, called “Hellenic EcoMarine Synergy, Coop, Ltd.” (or ECOMASYN). This Organization is a sustainable response to the business challenges of the near future, to the economic crisis of the sector and to the large unemployment wave in the Piraeus area.

The mainpurpose of this synergy is for its members to benefitthrough cooperation, provide integrated state of the art solutions to clients, create technology sharing schemes, develop the sector through provision of advanced services as well as provide high quality consultation & training. Moreover, main objective is to build trust to the clients about the added value services that can be provided in a cost effective way. The services to be provided willfunction within the spectrum ofthe so–called “Green Shipping”, focusing on Energy Efficiency through type approved systems of Scrubbers/emissions abatement, Ballast Water Treatment, LNG and Alternative Marine Fuels, etc.
In order to achieve its objectives the Cooperative strives for the interconnection of its specialized network (professionals & companies) with various stakeholders, offering “pro bono” comprehensive advisory and structural support, training and consulting, in order to collectively maximize its partners’ business value and advance the quality of their services.

Focus is put in the following areas:

· Participation in International, European Union or National Research &Development programs and projects in partnership with other stakeholders

ECOMASYN also aims not only at getting together companies, suppliers, service providers, institutional organizations, universities, professional associations, etc. but also at helping to improve the extroversion of the Greek shiprepair and shipbuilding industry in general.
