In front of an ocean of data, digitization is helping shipping move forward faster and more safely, Goulielmos Roussos, Supt. Automation Engineer at Enterprises Shipping & Trading S.A., told maritimes.gr during the 5th ShipIT Conference held in Athens a few days ago.

More and more data is being accumulated from ships and other sources and there is a need to be able to use and evaluate it to help make decisions on the company’s next steps better by controlling its costs and expenditure, or making decision on future investment for further development. All this allows managers of a company to have a better idea of what they want to do,” explained Mr. Roussos, who was also one of the speakers at the forum

Now many actions taken by people at a slower pace and with a high likelihood of error can be made more automated, such as checking the performance of the ship’s engine or hull status, he added.

The use of maritime software is nowadays non negotiable. “I think such software is now needed. A very simple question, such as how much costs does a ship have today, could not be answered immediately. Now, with the click of a button in seconds, you can get the overall result you are looking for, so the company can make improvements, set goals and achieve them much more easily,” he stressed.

Enterprises Shipping & Trading S.A. has selected Microsoft Dynamics NAV from Fortune Technologies. One key reason for this choice is Microsoft and the second is that the product is centralized, that is, all modules are talking on the same system so it is a complete ERP system and one can have instant answers from all departments for a problem without the need to use other interfaces, Mr. Roussos explained.

The next big step is to involve machine learning, artificial intelligence, to help make it easier to get results and move companies even further, he said.
