Diana acquires cape
Diana Shipping of Greece has acquired a capesize bulker under construction at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China.
Excluding newbuildings Diana, which is led by chief executive Simeon Palios, currently oversees a fleet of 39 bulkers.
In a statement the New York-quoted operator said the 180,000-dwt vessel cost $50m and is due for delivery by the middle of next month.
According to the Clarksons Shipping Intelligence Network database the unit, Hull Number BC18.0-51, was inked by Oldendorff Carriers in January 2013.
Industry observers note the same German operator sold a 180,000-dwt bulker under construction at Beihai to Diana for $58m earlier this year.
On Friday US sale-and-purchase broker Compass Maritime Services told clients that prompt capesize resales are commanding $54m on average.
This assessment, coupled with the price tag tied to today’s transaction, illustrates how far asset values in the dry-bulk segment have fallen since the start of 2014.
Today, capes trading in the spot market are seeing day rates of around $8,000 on average, which represents a weekly decline of roughly 16.6\%.
