Commodore Jr
Captain Panagiotis Tsakos has worn the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA)’s commodore hat.
Panagiotis Tsakos, 12, who received the Connecticut Maritime Association commodore award on behalf of his eponymous grandfather.
But it was not the sea captain who founded Greek shipping company Tsakos Shipping & Trading.
It was 12-year-old Panagiotis Tsakos, the elder Tsakos’s grandson and captain of his local soccer team.
“I must be the youngest commodore ever. Even younger than Peter Evensen,” he said, referring to the Teekay chief executive.
The Tsakos empire heir apparent, son of Tsakos Energy Navigation chief executive Nikolas Tsakos, accepted the annual honour on behalf of his grandfather today at the Commodore Gala at CMA’s Shipping 2015 conference in Stamford.
Last year’s commodore, Robert Bugbee, handed the headwear to the young proxy.
The Scorpio Tankers and Scorpio Bulkers president was reticent to roast the pre-teen, as is traditional at these dinners.
“Your grandfather’s done such a good job. There’s not much I can take you down for. I mean, you’re 12 years old, right? And even I have my limits,” Bugbee said. “If you were 13, that would be different.”
