Xi said he is willing to work with Trump to write a new chapter in the history of China-U.S. relations with the courage and a sense of responsibility to history.

Calling Xi’s state visit to the United States constructive and very successful, Trump said that the two sides held in-depth exchanges on U.S.-China relations and major international and regional issues, achieving positive outcomes that will benefit both countries.

He said he looks forward to maintaining close contact with Xi and jointly guiding the development of U.S.-China relations.

After the tea chat, Xi and Peng, accompanied by Trump and Melania, visited the U.S. National Archives. They walked together into the central hall, where they were briefed on the National Archives and its exhibits.

The archives carry the wisdom of the forebears and offer insights for the future, Xi said, adding that over the past 250 years, the American people have pursued the American Dream and built a prosperous country and a beautiful home on the North American continent.

The Chinese people, inheriting 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, have continued to make new achievements on the new journey toward realizing the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Xi said.

As two distinctive countries, China and the United States have different histories and cultures, social systems and development paths, Xi said.

However, the people of the two countries share the same aspiration for a better life despite the differences, he said.

If the two countries recognize and respect their differences, deepen mutual understanding and learn from each other, seek the biggest common denominator, expand the list of areas for cooperation, and properly manage differences, China-U.S. relations will enjoy steady and sustained growth, Xi said. ■

There is ample reason to do so. The interests of China and the United States are deeply intertwined, and there is plenty of room for them to work together. Also, achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.

China and the United States should, and fully can, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results through practical cooperation, help each other succeed through healthy competition, properly manage differences by seeking common ground while respecting differences, and build peace by fostering mutual trust.

Economic and trade cooperation has long been regarded as the ballast for bilateral ties. A stable China-U.S. economic and trade relationship requires both expanding the list of cooperation and shortening the list of problems.

The economic and trade teams of the two countries recently held a new round of consultations and reached joint arrangement, which is good news for the industries and people of both countries, as well as the global economy.

The same approach can also be applied to emerging areas that will shape the future of humanity. Both China and the United States are leading nations in artificial intelligence (AI). While they compete in AI, they have even more reasons to cooperate. The two sides should leverage respective strengths in AI rather than guard against each other.

The two sides can continue to engage in dialogue on AI, exchange views on its risks and benefits, and work together to prevent the misuse and abuse of AI. They should also maintain human control over AI technologies, and ensure that AI serves human progress.

Today, China-U.S. relations once again stand at a new historical starting point. Building a constructive relationship of strategic stability between the two major countries is not an expediency, nor will it be realized overnight. The two sides need to work persistently to deliver on their common understandings and work together to build a better world. ■

The Asia-Pacific is increasingly at the center of the global economy, home to some of the world’s most dynamic markets, manufacturing networks and technological ecosystems. How Beijing and Washington manage their differences and competition will therefore shape far more than their bilateral relationship. It will affect the prosperity, security and development of the broader region.

The economic reality is straightforward: China and the United States are the world’s two largest economies, deeply embedded in an interconnected global system. Neither can sustainably prosper in complete isolation, and neither should assume that holding back the other’s growth automatically guarantees its own.

Competition is inevitable. But competition does not have to become confrontation. The more productive approach is to strengthen domestic competitiveness while preserving space for trade, investment, dialogue and cooperation where interests align.

China and the United States experienced extraordinary economic expansion during decades in which their economies became increasingly interconnected. That history was not without disagreements or costs. But it also demonstrated that economic competition and mutual benefit can coexist.

The stakes are especially high in the Asia-Pacific, where economies are deeply connected. Growth in one major market can generate demand, investment and supply-chain opportunities elsewhere. Conversely, disruption between the world’s two largest economies can transmit costs throughout the region.

Cooperation should therefore remain a foundation of the relationship. Competition needs boundaries, and disagreements must be managed before they become confrontation.

Countries across Southeast Asia and the Pacific want to trade with China, cooperate with the United States, and pursue relationships with both according to their own interests. Their future should not be reduced to a choice between Washington and Beijing.

But there is an even larger question: Where will the next generation of global growth come from?

For much of modern economic history, a disproportionate share of global wealth, capital, technology and consumption was concentrated in a relatively small group of advanced economies. That geography of prosperity is changing.

Across Asia, Africa, Latin America and other emerging regions, billions of people aspire to higher incomes, better infrastructure, greater industrial capacity and improved living standards. Their development will create new consumers, producers, investors and sources of innovation, expanding the global economic pie.

For China, the United States and other economies, this represents not simply a challenge but a major opportunity. A growing Global South will generate demand for technology, healthcare, energy, infrastructure, transport, financial services and advanced manufacturing.

Today, developing economies increasingly possess sophisticated technology, skilled workers, advanced manufacturing capacity and expanding consumer markets of their own. Affordability and technological capability are no longer necessarily opposites, while high-quality products and services are no longer confined to a small group of advanced economies.

This shift should encourage all major economies to improve their own competitiveness.

For the United States, for example, competitiveness cannot be built simply by restricting competitors. Tariffs and technological restrictions may serve particular policy objectives, but they cannot substitute for better infrastructure, stronger research institutions, more affordable housing, lower energy costs, higher productivity or greater innovation.

The same broader principle applies to every economy: Sustainable competitiveness comes from building, investing and innovating.

The objective should not be a race toward higher barriers, but higher productivity, greater innovation, lower structural costs and stronger living standards. This is why the Asia-Pacific and the wider Global South have a strong interest in a stable and open international economic environment.

The future of the global economy will not be determined by whether China and the United States compete. It will depend on how that competition is managed and whether there remains sufficient room for cooperation, economic exchange and development.

Neither country needs the other to fail in order to succeed. A more constructive path is for both to focus on strengthening their own economies while preserving the space for cooperation and growth that benefits the wider world.

It would be unrealistic to expect a single meeting to resolve all the problems in China-U.S. relations, but the upcoming Xi-Trump summit itself is a key step forward, providing both sides with a crucial opportunity to make 2026 a historic year that opens a new chapter in China-U.S. relations.

During their last meeting in May, the two heads of state agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability. The consensus charts a clear course for bilateral ties at a time when the two major countries in the world are seeking a right way for them to get along.

This time, the two sides can build on that vital mutual understanding and steer the giant ship of China-U.S. ties toward a steady course in the years ahead.

Despite Washington’s protectionist trade policy against China in recent years, economic and trade cooperation remains a major pillar for the development of the relationship between the world’s top two economies.

At present, more than 7,000 Chinese enterprises operate in the United States, and U.S. companies have established more than 84,000 enterprises in China. Two-way trade and investment have provided strong support for millions of jobs in the United States.

Even as some U.S. politicians clamor for “decoupling from China,” a survey of its members conducted this year by the U.S.-China Business Council found that 95 percent of U.S. respondents described their China operations as “somewhat to very important” to maintaining global competitiveness. The presence of prominent business leaders in Trump’s delegation on his May trip to China likewise spoke volumes about their eagerness to seize the opportunities created by China’s development.

Differences and frictions are inevitable between two major economies, but they can be addressed through consultations on an equal footing. Since 2025, China and the United States have held multiple rounds of economic and trade talks. Through dialogue based on equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit, the two sides have made progress in stabilizing economic and trade relations.

The lesson is hard to ignore: both sides have far more to gain by looking at the bigger picture and keeping their long-term interests in view. Turning trade and economic ties into instruments of political or security maneuvering does not make either side safer or stronger; it merely fractures supply chains, distorts markets and ultimately drives up costs for businesses and consumers.

Moreover, keeping dialogue open and expanding practical cooperation, by contrast, can provide greater certainty for the two economies and the wider global community.

A more stable China-U.S. relationship does not mean the absence of competition. When competition does happen, it must be a healthy one where both sides learn from each other, pursue excellence together, and compete fairly in compliance with rules.

Apart from managing their competition, Washington needs to join Beijing in adhering to another fundamental principle to prevent the giant ship of China-U.S. relations from capsizing: respecting each other’s core interests and major concerns, particularly the Taiwan question, the most important issue in China-U.S. relations.

Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the United States. If the Taiwan question is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.

Washington must match its stated commitment to the one-China policy with concrete actions, and respect Beijing’s four red lines concerning the Taiwan question, democracy and human rights, China’s path and system, and China’s development right.

China, as it pursues national rejuvenation, will never seek hegemony, nor will it give up its legitimate rights and interests. No one should expect China to accept outcomes that come at the expense of its own interests.

A stable China-U.S. relationship also rests on strong ties between the two peoples. It underscores the need for stronger people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

In 2023 in San Francisco, Xi proposed inviting 50,000 young Americans to China over five years for exchange and study. The target has been reached this year ahead of schedule.

The recent reunion in China of retired American teacher Ronald Sakolsky and his Chinese friend Yin Yuzhen rekindled their friendship and renewed a shared commitment to planting trees and combating desertification. This is just one of countless examples showing that friendship and cooperation between China and the United States remain the shared aspiration of the two peoples.

Looking back, the history of China-U.S. relations is replete with examples of the two countries working together in the face of common challenges.

From jointly fighting terrorism, responding to the global financial crisis, combating Ebola to addressing climate change, China and the United States have repeatedly shown that coordination and cooperation between the two countries can serve both their own interests and those of the wider world.

For China and the United States, keeping the world’s most important bilateral relationship on a steady course is more about themselves: it is about whether the two major countries can work together to bring greater stability and hope to a turbulent world. ■
