The tankers, which were empty of cargo after returning from destinations in Asia, were sailing in formation towards southern Africa, rather than opting to transit the southern Red Sea via the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint, according to AIS ship-tracking on LSEG and MarineTraffic.

One of the tankers, Dilam, had Gibraltar as its destination, ship tracking showed.

The vessels’ Saudi-based operator Bahri and other Saudi officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The tankers, each of which can carry a maximum of two million barrels of crude oil, had opted to re-route via the Cape taking into account the security situation, two trade sources said, based on their assessments.

Their journeys will add at least 25 additional days of sailing time if they opt to cross Suez back to Saudi ports in the Red Sea, according to Reuters calculations.

The Iran-aligned Houthis on July 20 declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, opening a new front against the U.S. and its allies in the Iran war.

Houthi attacks in recent days on Saudi-linked ships prompted London’s marine insurance market last week to widen its “high risk” zone in the Red Sea, adding waters close to more Saudi Arabian ports.

Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub (The Decarb Hub) has called for a standardised approach to the design and assessment of Safe Havens on ammonia-fuelled vessels, highlighting that inconsistent interpretations of emerging regulatory requirements could result in differing safety outcomes across the future ammonia fleet.

This is set out in a new report, ‘Safe Havens for ammonia-fuelled ships’, which examines how the maritime sector can apply lessons from offshore oil and gas, chemical processing and other safety-critical industries to address a new requirement introduced under the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships using Ammonia as Fuel. The new guidelines now require vessels to incorporate Safe Havens to protect crew in the event of an ammonia release.

However, the report highlights that, as is often the case with interim, goal-based guidance for a new safety concept, the guidelines set high-level requirements that leave room for differing interpretations of what makes an effective Safe Haven. It proposes a shared framework to help vessel designers, operators, classification societies and flag administrations apply these requirements consistently as ammonia-fuelled vessels enter service.

The Decarb’s Hub research found that Safe Havens should not be viewed as standalone spaces designed solely to prevent ammonia exposure. Instead, they should be treated as human-centred systems that form part of a vessel’s wider emergency response strategy.

The report identifies three core functions that every maritime Safe Haven should provide: protection, command and control, and accessibility. Together they are intended to ensure that all crew remain protected from ammonia and other hazards, while enabling the execution of the vessel’s emergency response plan.

Drawing on established practices from industries that routinely manage toxic gas hazards, the report recommends that Safe Haven performance is assessed against realistic worst-case scenarios. It also highlights the importance of calculating Safe Haven endurance periods, assessing accessibility, regular testing and maintenance and human factors considerations to ensure systems continue to perform as intended throughout a vessel’s operational life.

The report concludes that the industry should focus on developing standardised methods for demonstrating Safe Haven performance. Establishing a consistent basis for assessment will help ensure Safe Havens deliver the intended level of protection across the future ammonia-fuelled fleet while supporting regulatory certainty and long-term operational confidence.

Jonathan Bolton, Decarbonisation Risk Analyst at the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, said: “Ammonia has the potential to play an important role in shipping’s decarbonisation journey, but its adoption must be supported by safety solutions that are robust, practical and consistently applied. Safe Havens are a new requirement for ammonia-fuelled ships and as with any new safety concept, the industry needs practical guidance to build a shared understanding of how Safe Havens should be designed and assessed.

Our report brings together decades of experience from industries that have long managed toxic gas risks and translates those lessons into a maritime context. By identifying the critical functions that Safe Havens must perform and proposing a common framework for their assessment, we hope to support designers, operators, classification societies and regulators as they work towards the safe deployment of ammonia-fuelled vessels.”

The findings are intended to support shipowners, designers, regulators and classification societies as they develop the first generation of ammonia-fuelled vessels and contribute to the long-term evolution of international regulations governing ammonia safety.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) is collaborating with ArcelorMittal to create a Global Operating Model that sets a consistent group-wide standard for dry bulk terminal operations across its international port portfolio.

The initiative will establish a common operating baseline for ArcelorMittal Global Ports’ network across different continents, regulatory environments and operating cultures. It aims to reduce variability, strengthen safety and reliability, improve portfolio-level visibility, reinforce ESG, biodiversity and sustainability practices, and support disciplined digital implementation.

LR will design a practical framework for terminals with varying asset ages, operating maturity and local practices. The Global Operating Model will combine a controlled Operations Manual, structured SOP library, checklist-based controls, and self-audit and assurance tools focused on shift execution, evidence capture, measurable compliance and continuous improvement.

The documentation will also embed environmental stewardship, biodiversity, emissions and resource-efficiency awareness, responsible waste and runoff management, community and stakeholder interfaces, and clear evidence requirements for governance, assurance and future reporting.

The model is intended to move ArcelorMittal’s portfolio beyond site-by-site standardisation towards a group-level performance, governance and control system. It will enable common KPI definitions, consistent reporting, cross-terminal benchmarking, clear escalation logic and structured improvement planning.

16-shuttle tanker fleet making TEN one of the largest shuttle tanker owners in the world

Athens, Greece – July 24, 2026 – TEN, Ltd (NYSE: TEN) today announced the delivery and naming of DP2 suezmax shuttle tanker “Anfield DP” from Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd (“Samsung”) in South Korea, the third in a series of 12 DP2 shuttle tankers under construction at Samsung. The vessel will commence a 10-year employment to a US oil major, with options to extend until the vessel’s 20th year anniversary. The delivery of “Anfield DP” further advances the company’s second phase expansion in the Brazilian offshore space, having established a presence
in this “high barriers-to-entry” market since 2012.

The naming ceremony was attended by dignitaries from Greece, South Korea and the USA. Her Excellency, Ms. K. Guilfoyle, the US Ambassador to Greece, named the vessel which hoisted the Greek flag.

With this latest addition, TEN operates seven shuttle tankers on long-term employment, with nine more on order. Minimum gross revenues from the backlog of
long-term charters are currently approximately $3.5 billion.

European Shipowners have been advocating for the inclusion of compliant Indian yards since the entry into force of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (SRR). Beyond its practical significance for European shipowners, the proposal sends a strong political signal: non-OECD yards that meet the SRR’s safety and environmental requirements can and should be recognised.

“This is a long-awaited and very welcome step, which rewards the investments these yards have made to meet EU standards. We now count on policymakers to swiftly finalise and adopt the List so that the two facilities can be approved without further delay, and we hope to see more compliant non-OECD yards making the List in the future. Capital Ship Management Corp., K Shipbuilding and Lloyd’s Register (LR) have launched a Joint Development Project (JDP) to develop a wind-assisted 50,000 dwt Medium Range (MR) tanker.

While wind-assisted propulsion has gained traction across bulk carrier and specialist vessel segments, its application in the MR tanker market remains largely unexplored.

The project aims to bridge that gap by assessing how Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) can be integrated into a commercially competitive tanker design, while maintaining operational flexibility and cargo-carrying capability.

The collaboration combines Capital Ship Management’s operational expertise, K Shipbuilding’s tanker design and construction capability, and LR’s technical assurance and regulatory knowledge to address both the engineering and compliance challenges associated with deploying WAPS on a mainstream tanker platform.

The project will include technical studies, design optimisation and regulatory assessments to support future Approval in Principle (AiP) activities and establish a pathway towards commercial deployment.

The signing of the JDP marks the first stage of a broader technical programme that will examine the operational, engineering and regulatory considerations associated with wind-assisted tanker designs, supporting the development of commercially viable solutions for low-emission shipping.
