Big data – big money

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) has offered a £10m ($15.6m) grant over five years to support research by the UK’s Alan Turing Institute into engineering applications of big data for the real world.

Lloyd Register’s charity, which supports engineering-related research and education, announced the award as it published a Foresight review of big data.

The award will add to some $42m pledged by the UK Government in its latest budget to the new institute that will lead research into the development of data-centric engineering.

Philip Nelson, chief executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which will partner the Turing Institute, said there is a need for a £100m total research investment in the field.

The foundation’s Foresight review set out four main areas for priority action, described by LRF managing director Richard Clegg as:

Technology road-mapping: to forecast technology developments in data-centric engineering and plan and co-ordinate efforts.

Design for data: recognising that embedded sensors, intelligent systems and data management will form part of engineering design requirements.

Codes and standards: as more data is generated, collected, transmitted, and manipulated by engineering systems, its quality, traceability, security and integrity need to be assured.

Data analytics: developing algorithms and mathematical models for analysis, helping make informed decisions to enhance the safety, reliability and performance.
