Angelakos (Hellas) : M/V GALLIA GRAECA II – Naming and delivery ceremony

28.11.2025

On 27 October 2025, Angelakos (Hellas) S.A. took delivery of a new Kamsarmax vessel on behalf of its Principals at the Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) shipyard in Nantong, China.

The Cypriot-flagged vessel was christened Gallia Graeca II and is the first in a series of eight state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly Kamsarmax newbuildings under construction at the NACKS and DACKS shipyards—marking an exciting new chapter in our fleet’s evolution. Upon completion of the full series, Angelakos (Hellas) S.A. will operate one of the world’s largest, youngest, and most environmentally advanced Kamsarmax fleets.

Maritime trade has long been a driver of global development—and a channel through which cultures met and evolved. Beginning in the 8th century B.C., Greeks spread across the Mediterranean and the Euxine Pontus (Black Sea), establishing settlements along the coasts of Europe, Asia, and Africa and carrying with them their customs, language, and ideas.

One such chapter unfolded in ancient Gallia—modern-day France—where Greeks from Phocaea in Asia Minor founded the port of Massalia (Marseille) around 600 B.C. This thriving maritime hub became a gateway for Greek cultural influence across Provence and southern Gaul. Over time, the depth of this influence led some to refer to parts of Celtic Gaul as Gallia Graeca.

In this same spirit of connection, m/v Gallia Graeca II stands as a contemporary symbol of the enduring Franco-Hellenic relationship—bridging maritime heritage from antiquity to the present day and carrying it forward into the future.

The vessel’s baptismal ceremony was officiated by the Greek Orthodox priest, Father Jeremiah Cho, with Mrs. Pauline Le Ven, Professor of Classics at Yale University, serving as Godmother. Attending the ceremony were Capt. Stephanos E. Angelakos, Mr. Evangelos Angelakos with his wife Katigko and their granddaughter Katerina Psyri, as well as the General Manager and Technical Director of Angelakos (Hellas) S.A., Mr. Costas Chrysostomidis, accompanied by his wife Katerina.

They were joined by the company’s dedicated site team of naval architects, engineers and seafarers led by Project Manager Mr. Panayiotis Makris, whose expertise and professionalism remain instrumental to the project, as well as the vessel’s Master, officers, and crew.

The shipyard leadership was represented by Mr. Gao Yongqiang, President, and Mr. Junji Maeda, Senior Vice President, along with senior executives.

Also present were partners of Angelakos (Hellas) S.A.—including brokers, makers, suppliers, agents—together with Mr. Sau Weng Tang, Chairman of Lloyd’s Register in China, and Dr. Vasilis Trigkas of Tsinghua University.

We warmly welcome Gallia Graeca II under our management and wish her and her crew safe seas and fair skies!
