European waterborne technology platform expands its membership

The Waterborne Technology Platform welcomes its 100th member on 3 August 2021, underlining the importance of the activities of the Platform.

On 03 August 2021, the Waterborne Technology Platform welcomed its 100th member. MARLOG – Maritime & Logistics Innovation Denmark, is the most recent member to join the Waterborne Technology Platform. The membership of the platform is representing the broader European waterborne sector. The majority of the European maritime technology sector (shipyards and maritime equipment manufacturers), the large multinational deepsea container shipping companies, the inland waterway transport sector, and the broader waterborne specific research community are just a few amongst the total group of members.

The Platform is specialised in developing Strategic Research and Innovation Agendas in the area of Ports & Logistics, Blue Growth and Ships & Shipping. These agendas are centred around the key role of the broader sector to develop, and successfully deploy, innovative technologies to address societal challenges. In addition, the Platform is coordinating the Co-Programmed Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport in the framework of Horizon Europe.

The Chairman of the Waterborne Technology Platform, Henk Prins, says: “The Waterborne Technology Platform welcomes the expansion of the membership with MARLOG from Denmark, so as to ensure that the broader European waterborne sector is able to contribute to the development of the roadmaps for our future. In addition, the expansion of our membership shows the commitment of the sector to develop and deploy solutions for societal challenges. Although the sector is often branded as somewhat old- fashioned and not able to move forward, what we experience today is a full commitment of the sector to transform into a sustainable future, whilst remaining a frontrunner. Although expansion of the membership is not an objective as such, further involvement of key players in e.g. Ports & Logistics and Blue Growth would certainly be welcome”.

The CEO of MARLOG, Sverre V. Lenbroch says: “Joining the Waterborne Technology Platform gives us an opportunity to strengthen the Danish maritime innovation agenda, through European collaboration and partnerships. By joining Waterborne we also look forward to contributing to the European maritime transition to green technologies and digitalization, bridging the maritime and logistics sectors. Denmark is the 5th largest maritime country in the world – so we are a strong cooperation partner – and we are very happy to join the Waterborne Technology Platform as member Nr. 100”.

WATERBORNE TP has been set up as an industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a continuous dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders, such as classification societies, shipbuilders, shipowners, maritime equipment manufacturers, infrastructure and service providers, universities or research institutes, and with the EU Institutions, including Member States (www.waterborne.eu). The members of Waterborne TP comprise members as well as associated members from both maritime and inland navigation countries, representing about 18 Member States. In addition, the Associations member of the Waterborne Technology Platform represent the broader waterborne sector throughout the entire EU.
